Edited by: Aidan Brooder on 25/06/2011 17:42:30 The whole monocle or shirts-thing doesn't make me worried. The leaked CCP internal note does. As long as items are just vanity items, what do I care? I like Roleplay and I think Walking on stations is a good thing.
Even "ships for real money" has been an option for a long time now. You buy two Plex, you sell them, you buy your faction battleship or whatever.
There are three things that greatly worry me: 1. If I decide I need e.g. a Scorpion now, another player has build it. It doesn't just beam in. Items with an actual game effect that can be bought directly from CCP will ruin the complexity of the economy model.
2. I play a lot of MMOs. I always return to EVE, because the playerbase is refreshingly different, as is the game concept. I know CCP obviously - like all the others - wants to absorb a broader playerbase. Some more RP types will be attracted once Incarna is finished. That is good. I know at least six people who want to give EVE a try now. But why annoy the old players with things like this over-priced shop. You cannot incorporate players who like games like STO, the coming SWTOR, etc. It is just not your piece of the market, CCP. If you transform EVE into a game like STO, e.g., you will lose everything that distinguishes EVE and makes it a mature game.
3. I have the feeling you just hired a lot of marketing-mercenaries and analysts that definitely point you the wrong way, when it comes to EVE. They do not understand the product. Listen to your playerbase, not some guys trained to milk a dead cow. That is, squeeze money out of EVE in short term, forgetting that EVE always survived and was great, because the long term goals were good and aligned with player interest. Because a certain credibility and not going with the latest MMO trends is something that also makes EVE attractive in many players (active and prospective) eyes.
I will not kill my subscription just yet, but if the way you want to lead EVE is to make it a standard boredom questy "buy what you lack in skill" game, I will reconsider in a few months from now. It's the best, because it's different. Take it's uniqueness away = Take attractiveness away.
